The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
