Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
