Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
