The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
