Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
