American Attack on Caracas Raises Anxieties of Future Greenland Acquisition.

The recent American strike in the South American nation and the detention of its leader have ignited unease regarding Washington's designs on the Arctic territory. Followers of the former president's base have reportedly set their sights on the vast landmass in the wake of the events in South America.

Provocative Posts and Official Backlash

Only a short time after the start of the Venezuelan campaign, a prominent right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential aide, posted a symbolic map. The picture showed Greenland draped with the American flag, with the single-word caption: "SOON."

This blatant threat to claim the resource-abundant region, which is a member of the NATO alliance, provoked immediate and strong criticism from Denmark's officials.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to work together as such. US security is equally Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," stated the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States work together to guarantee security in the North."

The diplomat further pointed out that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending recently, allocating a large sum expressly for Northern and North Atlantic defence. "And yes, we expect full recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he emphasized.

Political Appointments and Geopolitical Goals

The tensions were further complicated by the previous naming of a US state governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the president, saying it was an "honour" to serve in a volunteer capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

Following the military action in Venezuela, this envoy commended the administration's decisive move, linking it to the broader "war on drugs."

Since returning to office, the American leader has repeatedly unnerved European allies with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically strategic for defence and potential resource extraction. It currently hosts the northernmost US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a notable television appearance, the president refused to exclude the resorting to armed action to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid intensifying great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Friction and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of intent, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a nuanced sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's residents seek independence from Denmark, there is also little to no desire to join the United States. The island has had the option to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some experts are increasingly re-evaluating the possibility of such a move. One policy director specializing in military analysis admitted she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a few thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she observed.
