A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
